I met Jane and James near Federal Triangle for their Washington, D.C., engagement session.
Jane and James have been all over the world. They grew up over a thousand miles away from each other, went to college in different states, and began working and traveling in many different countries. It was by chance that they even met.
In the fall of 2005, Jane finished graduate school in North Carolina and had just started a job that brought her to DC. James had been in DC for many years, and had just started a training program for a job that was going to take him around the world.
In a dive bar in Columbia Heights, Jane says, “…we met, after an initial misunderstanding over cheap beer versus rail gin, James got my attention again with his easy manner and fun conversation. We started dating, a bit sporadically and fairly casually at first. I remember getting a random text from him one night that read “Good night” and instead of, “Aww, that’s sweet,” I remember thinking, “What a weirdo.” Soon enough, though, I was smitten.”
They fell in love and tried not to worry about upcoming travel plans. Unfortunately, things got rocky when distance was put between them. James was off to South Africa, they shared a trip together to Egypt, then James went to Afghanistan and Albania. They broke up and got back together and then broke up again.
James shares, “A few years later, after seeing a bit of the world, I figured out that I needed to share my life with somebody and Jane had always been in the back of my mind. Finally, an opportunity came up to be posted to DC for a couple years and, even though it was a bad career move and a pay cut, I jumped at the chance and started trying to woo her via Skype before my bags were even packed.”
“We’re having a small, intimate ceremony,” Jane adds, “at a gorgeous bed and breakfast in Lovettsville, then hopping a plane to Minnesota for a week. Back on the farm where James grew up, we’re gathering even more friends and family around us and we’re planning to celebrate with a corn feed, skeet shooting, and hay rides. One of my favorite things about our wedding is that we have a line-item in the budget for ammo. How cool is that?”
Congratulations Jane and James!
