On Friday, March 23rd, the cherry blossoms were at their peak! Katie, Drew and I beat the crowds and made our way to the Tidal Basin for their engagement portraits.

Katie told me, “Drew and I have lived in many different places, from the Midwest to the Northeast to Central America and Europe, but D.C. is where we met and started our lives together. We have built so many great memories in the city over the past four years.”

The couple couldn’t think of a better place to celebrate their engagement than surrounded by such a beautiful D.C. icon, the amazing cherry blossoms.

In 1912, Japan gave the City of Washington, D.C., a special gift–3,000 cherry trees, One century later, the National Cherry Blossom Festival is the nation’s greatest springtime celebration.

We started the session on the steps of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial just as the sun was beginning to set.

The blossoms were falling all around us and made for a beautifully romantic fairy tale setting.

Katie and Drew’s first date was at the restaurant Matchbox in Gallery Place.

Katie remembers, “During dinner a woman sitting next to us spilled water all over herself. When Drew offered his clean napkin to her, I thought, is this guy for real or is he putting on some kind of act to impress me? I soon learned it was no act! Drew really is one of the kindest people I know. After dinner, we went to Rocket Bar nearby for drinks, where he continued to make me laugh — another one of the many reasons I love him so much. At the end of the night, we were walking to the Metro and it started to rain. Drew happened to have an umbrella, but I didn’t. He got it out and opened it and held it over my head, leaving himself to get wet. I was so surprised at how sweet he was and I gave him a kiss on his cheek. The rest is history!”

Katie brought this gorgeous fan that was perfect for a sneak-a-kiss photo.

As the blossoms began to fall and cover the ground they looked like confetti. Congratulations Katie and Drew! They will be married in October 2012. Let’s CELEBRATE!

If you are planning a visit to the Tidal Basin, check out the official guide with event information and consider these tips. While you are in the city, I highly recommend swinging by the Hirschhorn for the outdoor light exhibit, Doug Aitken: SONG 1, showing March 22 through May 13, 2012, daily from sunset to midnight.

  2. Gloria Nickels (Drew's mom) says:

Each photograph took my breath away………..I know these two, and their goodness and love for each other is so apparent. Beautiful, meaningful setting. Let’s celebrate indeed!
