Mythily and John are a super sweet couple getting married this fall in NYC! For their engagement session, we met in the beautiful Shakespeare Gardens.

Mythily was born in India and moved with her family to Cleveland, Ohio, when she was 6 years old. She came to New York to get her MBA from Cornell University and now has lived in New York City for 7 years. She currently works as the Senior Vice President of Communications Strategy & Development at Citigroup.

John was born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised by a large and loving extended family who emigrated from Haiti in the early 1970s.  John attended Pace University and New York University where he earned his associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s degrees. John currently works as the Director of Admissions and Recruitment at the New York Academy of Art, attracting the world’s top artists in their distinguished Master of Fine Arts program.

Mythily and John connected online through Coffee Meets Bagel. For their first date, John picked a romantic French restaurant wthat happened to be two blocks from Mythily’s apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.  The date went incredibly smoothly and both Mythily and John felt an instant connection. In the course of the night, they realized that they had both been in the same neighborhood for years but never met.

In less than two weeks they both knew they didn’t want to date anyone else. Within a month, they were inseparable.

John quickly felt this was something special, “When we were alone together and out in public, I always said to myself “how did I get so lucky? Better put a ring on it and lock it up, boy!!!”

John put together an elaborate scheme that ended up with a dinner at their favorite restaurant.

Mythily shares, “We started out our night at Amelie, our favorite restaurant, at the bar where we normally sit, not at a table. Eventually our table was ready. I was all excited because it happened to be the table where we sat when we had our first date at that restaurant (our fourth date ever… a marathon 6-hour date). But then we finished dinner and he suggested we do one more drink before we head home because he was tired.

Then some lady had a really bright light from her phone pointed in our direction… I commented on how bright it was and John got up. I thought he was going to tell her to turn it off, but he started moving the table away instead. I was utterly confused and asked what he was doing.

That was when I realized John Legend’s “All of Me” was playing (one of our favorite songs)… and then it hit me. I immediately started crying. I didn’t even remember anything he said but I remember nodding yes when he asked me to marry him. In fact the next day, I asked if he got down on his knee… I totally didn’t remember because I was so overwhelmed! 🙂

Of course, I said yes and he put the ring on. As I was hugging and kissing him, I suddenly realized that many of our friends were there too! He had arranged for them to show up a minute after he was going to propose. And the lady with the light? A friend of his that I hadn’t met yet who he asked to video the proposal!”
