I am super lucky to have a back patio in my New York City apartment. My husband, Eric, and I searched high and low for a budget friendly place on the Upper West Side. We felt so lucky to have found our new home on the first floor of a walk-up building. Being on the first floor means we don’t have much light inside, but we do have an outdoor space.
Now we just had to figure what to do with it!
When we moved in, it was a cement and brick 12×10 foot nothing. But with lattice, string lights and some greenery it is on its way to becoming our own little oasis.
Being surrounded by tall buildings made it difficult to find the right plants that can do well without tons of sun. Another concern was attracting city critters. After lots of research and talks with the people at Home Depot, the Lincoln Center flower fair and the green market outside of the Natural History Museum, we decided to go with ivy, impatiens, arborvitae and packs of wildflower seeds.
Right now the garden space is small sprouts with the hope of lots of color.
Fingers crossed for lots of blooms coming soon!
