Sarah and Michael had their engagement session during the Cherry Blossom festival in Washington, D.C.! It was gorgeous!

Sarah shares, “Michael and I met through mutual friends at work where he was working as a scientist and I was a validation engineer at the same company. We really started talking at a happy hour, where we learned that we had both graduated from UMBC, Mike with a degree in biology and me with a degree in physics. We spent most of the happy hour trying to find out if we had any of the same professors or mutual friends but we did not. He later admitted to me that he only went to the happy hour because he knew I would be there. After that, Mike started bringing me baked goods whenever he would go out for lunch. We started dating a couple of weeks later and now spend a lot of time cooking and baking together.

Mike is really good at keeping me calm. I tend to be a very anxious person. I remember the first time I told him I loved him was when we went ice skating in DC at the sculpture garden and I thought my skating ticket was lost. I became so upset and I wanted to cry. Mike just came over sat me down, gave me a hug and told me everything would be okay. Then he turned around and found my ticket right behind me as it had just fallen out of my pocket. That was when I first realized that I loved him.
Mike took me with him to go ring shopping so that he could get an idea of the kind of ring I like. He had intended to surprise me later but we ended up finding a ring that we both really liked.  Two hours later, he nervously proposed to me in front of the steps in our house.”

Sarah and Michael will be getting married this fall. Happy Engagement!

Caryn and Trilby were married on a brisk, beautiful spring day at Chelsea Piers.

Caryn shares, “Our wedding day was exactly what I had hoped for, minus the cold temperature and bitter winds. Thankfully the venue was beautifully sunlit. Our ultimate goal was for people to be themselves and to have fun. We chose a playful, whimsical theme with colorful paper flowers from an Etsy designer, Kirsten Hausman (flowerthyme), and table confetti made in the design of things we love, like stars, arrows and dragonflies. We had only one request of our bride’s people, that they wear converse sneakers.

I have an arrow tattoo, which was especially meaningful to me on my wedding day. I have no family support and have faced a difficult journey learning to follow my heart despite what my family might think. Kasey Musgraves has a song called “Follow Your Arrow” which inspired my tattoo. On my wedding day, I definitely led with my heart and followed my arrow right to my beautiful bride.

I will never forget all the laughter and joyous celebration that occurred. Without the support of my family, it was so incredible to be enveloped in the abounding love of friends who are family. I am beyond happy to be married to my best friend and I look forward to a life of whimsy and unending love.”

Trilby shares, “Our wedding day couldn’t have been more perfect. The weather was windy but the blue sky and shining sun made up for the chilly temperature. The decorations added so much color to an already beautiful room and the view from the many windows was magnificent. Our bride’s people also added an assortment of rainbow colors with their matching dresses, sneakers, and ties.  Caryn chose teal as her accent color and I chose purple. I have a tattoo of a tree on my arm with stars instead of leaves. They are in shades of purple and teal, which represents the colors we both love.

It was quite amazing to me to see so many people at our wedding who love us and support us completely. They kept coming up to us all through the evening saying how beautiful the ceremony was and how heartfelt the vows were. The amount of love in that room seemed endless. I am ecstatic that I am married to the love of my life and I look forward to continually celebrating this love with my beautiful bride by my side.”

Charlotte and Jamie eloped all the way from Wales to have a Central Park wedding. Charlotte’s father walked her down the aisle of friends and family to their ceremony at the Ladies Pavilion.

Charlotte shares, “We chose New York because it is one of our favorite places in the world. We wanted a more intimate fairytale wedding and that’s exactly what we got.”

Jamie is a postman and Charlotte is a teacher. They met as young teenagers. Charlotte shares, “I was the girl next door to Jamie’s best friends and we met when we were about 12 and 14 years old. We were friends ever since, and then made it official six years later. Jamie and I went on holiday to Lisbon in Portugal. One night walking along the lit-up promenade Jamie got down on one knee.”

wedding wooden spoon

Charlotte carried a beautiful wooden spoon around her wrist. She shares, “My goddaughter Macy and Jamie’s goddaughter Cara gave me a love spoon to carry with my bouquet.”

Charlotte taught me about two Welsh traditions. The tradition of a love spoon is a wooden spoon decoratively carved and presented as a romantic gift. The spoon is normally decorated with special symbols. The bell on Charlotte’s spoon represents marriage and the heart represents love.

Another Welsh wedding tradition is to give honey. The “honeymoon” is the month after a wedding, when a bride’s father would give the groom all the honey mead he wanted. Welsh people believed that by eating some honey for a month after the wedding the bride would “bear fruit” and a child would be born within a year. They started calling the month the “honey month” but we now call it a “honeymoon.”

I met Vanessa and Thierry in the Metropolitan Museum of Art for their engagement session. It is one of my favorite places on earth. I could not wait to take some photos and capture this special time in their lives surrounded by all of the amazing art. We started out in the Egyptian room of the Temple of Dendur.

Vanessa shares, “Thierry and I met in the workplace. We both worked the midnight shift in a job where you rely on one another to get through things. My shift was a tight knit group of people and Thierry and I were friends for a long time before we realized we could/should be more.

The first date consisted of him bringing me the most amazing tarte Tatatin ever! He had made it from scratch! I’ve been hooked on him (and his cooking) ever since.

Last summer we traveled to France to participate in the baptism of Thierry’s godson. We spent time with family in Brittany before heading north to Normandy. We dined in a phenomenal, romantic restaurant in the town of Bayeux, spent the night in an old chateau, and then traveled to Paris for the last two days of our beautiful trip. We wandered the whole city exploring parts we hadn’t seen before. On the second night we took a ride on the Bateux Mouche. It was so relaxing, but as we began to turn back the air had grown chilly. Thierry gave me his jacket to place around my shoulders. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Upon the trip ending, we climbed the stairs leading up to the Eiffel Tower. Suddenly T said can you get the map out of my pocket. I thought it was odd, we knew where we were…and then I felt it. A box had been in his pocket the whole time. He took it from me, dropped to one knee, and proposed. He knew how much it would mean to me to propose in a city I loved so dearly. It was a beautiful moment I will not forget. That trip was incredible from start to finish.

We complement each other so well. Though our schedules are incredibly hectic, and don’t mesh, we still enjoy every moment spent together. We both love travel, food, adventure, and laughter. We laugh everyday and, even in bleak moments, we are able to see the positive side of things. T has three wonderful children who we love to spend time with.”

After walking through some American sculpture, we made our way up to the European paintings and these romantic pieces by Pierre-Auguste Cot.

Tara and Mike were married on a beautiful, chilly day in NYC. The day began with preparations at the Ritz Carlton hotel.

Tara shares, “Throughout the day of getting ready with my bridesmaids and family, I was pretty calm and wasn’t anxious. It wasn’t until about 45 minutes before I knew Jess was coming, that I got that butterfly feeling in my stomach. After some ‘prep’ photos, it was finally time to have our first look. We did this before the ceremony, so we were able to enjoy the cocktail hour and reception. As my bridesmaid Khloe and I were walking to where Michael was standing, I literally thought I was going to throw up. As I tapped him on the shoulder, and he turned around, all of my anxiety and nervousness went away. We had a few moments, shared a couple of laughs, and were able to enjoy (although slightly freezing) the beginning of our wedding day.”

Tara carried a photo of her father with her on her bouquet.

She shares, “My father was diagnosed with bladder cancer in October of 2014. Over the next 6 months, there were some good days and bad days. It was with all intentions that my dad was going to make our wedding. As March 28th was quickly approaching, his pain got worse and worse and our family decided it was best for him to stay in the comfort of his own home. Luckily, with today’s technology, my dad was able to FaceTime in. He participated in the ceremony and the reception. However, my favorite moment came between the two main events. Michael and I ‘hid’ away in the church while our guests headed to the reception venue. During this time, we were able to speak a few words with my dad. He explained that he got to see the entire ceremony and how touched he was that, although he could not be there in person, he was still able to participate. My father passed away on April 1st, 2015 – 4 days after we got married.”

The wedding ceremony was held at the Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Our Lady of the Rosary near Battery Park.

Mike shares, “It was so important to us to have my family priests marry us. The priests knew my grandmother, Malvina, from her teenage years. Since then, they’ve baptized, married, and buried several members of the Mattiello family. We were very honored that Father Bud and Father Charlie were able to drive in from Douglaston to celebrate our marriage.”

Mike shares, “I wrote a song for Tara on our engagement. She loved it so much that we decided that I would play the song at our reception. I was sitting in the groomsmen suite, warming up my voice with my guitar, when in walked my sister with a gift from the bride. I opened it and it was a Gibson Les Paul with a flat sunburst finish, engraved with “All My Love” and our wedding date 3-28-15. I was so happy I couldn’t contain myself. I immediately got out the guitar and played for my family and groomsmen. Much to Tara’s surprise, I decided to make a last-minute change to play Tara’s Song with my new, awesome wedding gift!”
